Independent Venue Week – Sunday Afternoon Smooth Jazz for all the family
Join us for an afternoon of Jazz to celebrate the finale of our Independent Venue Week offering for this year.
To help us entertain you we have Kerry Downing who has been playing the saxophone for the past 30 years. She graduated from Christ Church College University having studied music and media. Kerry is a versatile performer who can play many styles of music. She has performed at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, The Barbican, Tiviloi Gardens in Denmark, Euro Disney as well as festivals across Italy and Spain.
We also have the award-winning vocalist Sarah Ellen Hughes who began her career as lead vocalist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO). She has earned many accolades including winning the 2010 International Jazz Singing Competition, “Jazz Voices,” competing against singers from all over the world. Selected as a semi-finalist at the Montreux Jazz Festival Voice Competition, she was lucky enough to perform in front of Quincy Jones. Quincy himself said “Great singing girl, keep doing what you’re doing.”
Sarah has appeared at many of the UK’s top jazz venues including Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Jazz Club, Scarborough Jazz Festival and The Sage, Gateshead. She has released two critically-acclaimed albums, which feature some of this country’s best jazz artists including Dave O’Higgins and Ian Shaw. Her first album was selected as UK Jazz Radio’s “CD of the month” for a record three months running in early 2010.
Both performers, as well as being world class musicians, are friends of the Southern Maltings, living locally and helping us where they can, so we’d love to have you join us, supporting them supporting us, keeping Ware Creative and Keeping Music Live!!
Tickets are £5 per person with under 15’s having free access to this event.
Southern Maltings is a beautiful historic building which volunteers are developing into an amazing not for profit arts and performance centre. With a friendly atmosphere, it’s quickly gaining a reputation for great events, with the best sound and lighting and biggest stage and dance floor in town.
